Counseling Degree Pathways in Wyoming

The type of degree you choose should be based on both your current academic credentials and future career goals. Depending on what you want to do, you may need one or two degrees. The various counseling degree options are a(n):

• Associate Degree: An associate degree may be good if you want a quick entry into the field. The degree lasts two years and requires high school.

• Bachelor's Degree: A bachelor's degree may be good if you want opportunities to advance, and/or to eventually become licensed. The degree lasts four years and requires high school.

• Master's Degree: A master's degree is needed if you want to become a licensed professional counselor (LPC). The degree lasts one to two years and requires a bachelor's.

• Doctorate Degree: A doctorate degree may be good if you want to work at the highest levels, either in research (with a Ph.D.) or clinically (with a Psy.D.). The degree lasts three to six years in most cases and requires either a bachelor's or master’s.

• Graduate Certificate: A graduate certificate may be good if you wish to specialize. The certificate lasts one year or less and requires a bachelor's.

Online vs. Traditional Counseling Programs in Wyoming

Many Wyoming schools now offer both online and traditional counseling degree programs. Online programs frequently are more affordable and flexible, but traditional programs provide for more in-person interaction. Becoming a Licensed Counselor in Wyoming

To work as a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in Wyoming, you must complete a master's program, a 600-hour internship (as part of the program), and 3,000 hours of supervised work. You can sit for the licensure exam after completing these prerequisites.

Once licensed, you'll have to go through a renewal process every two years. The renewal process requires 45 hours of continuing education units (CEU) and a simple application. There isn't a renewal exam that must be passed.
