South Carolina Traditional MSW Admissions Requirements

Traditional MSW programs require 60 credit hours and a two-year commitment. For the most part, these types of programs are geared toward individuals who don’t have a background in social work. To apply, you’ll need:

• Bachelor’s degree, typically in psychology or a related area, from a regionally accredited institution
• Minimum GPA requirement (typically around 3.0)
• Letters of recommendation
• Personal statement or essay
• Resume or CV outlining relevant experience
• Completion of prerequisite courses (such as psychology, sociology, or human services)
• GRE scores (some programs may waive this requirement)
• Interview (some programs may require an interview as part of the application process)
• Background check and/or fingerprinting

South Carolina Advanced-Standing MSW Admissions Requirements

If you have a prior Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and a GPA of 3.5 or higher, consider enrolling in an advanced-standing program, which will allow you to graduate in around a year. To apply, all of the same admissions requirements are still valid. Currently, only two advanced-standing MSW programs exist in South Carolina, one offered at Winthrop University and the other offered at the University of South Carolina.
